about the character.

Basics

  • Name: Remus John Lupin
  • Birthdate: 10 March 1960, but he doesn't like it when people make a big deal out of his birthday, although he appreciates it when they remember. A simple 'happy birthday' is enough.
  • Citizenship: United Kingdom/England.
  • Current Residence: Remus is sharing a two bedroom flat with Sirius in Islington, London. Unable to afford a place of his own (and wanting the independence away from his parents), Sirius was kind enough to extend the invitation to his friend.
  • Blood Status: Halfblood.
  • Werewolf Registration: #10031960LU.

    Physical

  • Height/Weight: 5'9" and 150 lbs.
  • Hair/Eyes: Short brown hair and blue eyes.
  • Manner of Speech: Most of the time, Remus is soft spoken, but not quiet -- he has a gentle and controlled voice whenever he speaks, making it seem like he's a very calm person. When he does get angry or loses control, however, his voice becomes louder and full of much more passionate emotion.
  • Manner of Dress: Worn, hand-me-down-like clothing, often in need of fixing up. His parents will try to give him the occasional nice outfit (disguised as a birthday gift, so it feels less like charity), but his normal clothes are comfortable enough. He never wears anything extravagant, preferring plain, neutral colours and clothing that isn't a bother to take care of. The only really nice thing he owns to wear is a watch that his father gave him when he returned home after his final day at Hogwarts.
  • Physical Description: Average would be a good, overall word to describe Remus' appearance. Due to his lycanthropy, it's a lot harder to keep himself clean shaven, and so he often has a "scruffy" look. Most of his scars he's able to keep hidden easily enough under his clothing, but there are a few that are more visible than others; his worst scar is the one that changed his life forever, and is a large, angry jagged mark on his left side. Unfortunately, because the scars were caused by a werewolf, they cannot be healed do to their dark magic properties. Remus often looks tired, even more so after the full moon. He has a small frame which people underestimate, but he's stronger than he actually looks. Slightly pale skin and a flop of brown hair on the top of his head completes the look.
  • First Impression: He usually doesn't leave an outstanding impression -- Remus is rather average and unremarkable, and secretive with people he first meets. People tend to remember him more (in a bad light) if they learn of his lycanthropy.

  • Played By: James McAvoy | Werewolf Form
  • Handwriting: Journal

    Personal

  • General Personality: On the surface, Remus is a very secretive person. He prefers to keep things to himself when speaking to people he doesn't know, which can make him seem a little standoffish. Having to keep such a huge secret for most of his teenage life was difficult, and he feared sharing things with people in the off chance he would let it slip that he is a werewolf. However, if given a chance, once one actually gets to know Remus, he's surprisingly kind and likely one of the best listeners you'll ever come across. Remus has the patience of a saint -- but then, with people like James and Sirius as friends, he might not have survived Hogwarts without it.

Near the full moon, he can be a little moody and knowing this of himself, is often quiet and distant (not to mention his cravings for rare meat). He gets frustrated when people worry too much about him, especially during these times when all he wants is to not discuss it. Remus is more comfortable (and less sensitive) making jokes about his condition when it isn't so close to the full moon.

Remus is slowly becoming an expert on the art of Changing The Subject. There are often many times when he doesn't want to talk about something, wishes to avoid expressing his opinions, or is uncomfortable with the subject being discussed. Thus, he will try to divert the topic to something else in hopes of avoiding it altogether. Although it is sometimes obvious when he is attempting to do this, he is also quite stubborn when it comes to subjects he doesn't want to speak about, so it's usually easier to just drop it and let him have his way.

He puts others before himself, and keeps most of his emotions bottled up as much as he can -- it's one of the few things in his life he feels he can actually control. Unfortunately, keeping everything locked up causes him to become angrier than he normally would be otherwise when he does get upset (the result of the prank Sirius played on Snape with the Shrieking Shack is a good example of this). Despite his reserved nature, Remus didn't become a Marauder simply because he shared a room in school with his three friends. There is a brave and mischievous side to him that people wouldn't guess he even had, unless they knew him in Hogwarts. He's anything but timid, despite how he may appear.

  • Strengths and Weaknesses: Remus' biggest failing is that he often allows his friends to get away with more than he probably should. He tends to turn a blind eye when they're doing something he thinks is wrong, such as bullying someone or breaking a minor rule or two. Although he has become much better with this after the incident with the Shrieking Shack and there's only so far he'd let his friends go before he decides to speak up, it is still a weakness. Despite this, he is perfectly capable of standing up for himself and more than willing to stand up for his friends as well; he has no intention of just rolling over and taking insults or allowing people to seriously hurt others. Leniency is something he only grants to his close friends -- and he is far less forgiving, if at all, to those who would support Voldemort and his ideals.

He also underestimates people and tries not to give them the benefit of the doubt -- yes, while he has made friends who so not discriminate against him, Remus would rather assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

He is extremely good with keeping secrets and listening to others when they need a sympathetic ear. As mentioned, he has an incredible patience. once he does trust someone well enough to share his secrets, Remus is a very loyal friend. He is intelligent (although he has certainly worked to get there) and finds enjoyment in helping others with anything that he could be useful with. Making others happy and putting their needs before his is what makes him happy.

As for magical abilities, Remus is more book-smart than skilled. While he's far from incompetent, he knows the techniques behind the spells, but not the strength. His weakest subjects were Potions, Herbology, and had he bothered to take Care of Magical Creatures, he would not have done well in that class, either. His senses are a better than normal wizards, but this also makes him more sensitive to smells, which is an imperative part of potion making. His best subjects were Defence Against the Dark Arts and, of course, Astronomy. Remus is also skilled with several healing spells.

  • Mental Health: He likes to think he's sane, but he sometimes questions himself due to the sort of company he keeps. Remus has low self esteem and often keeps his feelings to himself.

    Relationships

  • Relatives:
    - David John Lupin: Father; halfblood; Gryffindor; deceased 20 April 1979. Used to work in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the Werewolf Capture Unit, but resigned as soon as his son was bitten. He now works in the Floo Network Authority of the Department of Magical Transportation. A far less demanding job, to be sure, but one that is also far less likely to anger a vengeful werewolf.
    - Bridget Marie Lupin née Ashby: Mother; halfblood; Hufflepuff; deceased 20 April 1979. Housewife, and perfectly happy to be one! Before she married David, she was working in a small muggle restaurant as a waitress.
  • Relationship with Family: Remus loves his family very much -- especially his parents, who have stood up for him and been there for him, never turning their backs, even after their little boy fell victim to Fenrir Greyback. However, they do tend to dote on him and are very over-protective -- especially his mother -- so although Remus tries to write frequently, he doesn't often visit.
  • Sexuality: He doesn't really think about it -- Remus has more important things to worry about than relationships and sexuality.
  • Significant Other: Engaged Married to Marlene McKinnon as of 12 November 1979 Widower as of 30 June 1980. He had dated a nice Hufflepuff girl in school, but it didn't last very long. Remus also used to have a crush on Lily Evans (who didn't?) as he got to know her better when they were both Prefects, but he never dared mention it.
  • Children: None.

    Educational

  • School: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
  • Years: 1971-1978.
  • House: Gryffindor.
  • Achievements: Prefect (1975-1976). The first werewolf to attend Hogwarts, and he also had a hand in the creation of the sadly confiscated Marauder's Map.
  • NEWTS:
    - Outstanding: Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy
    - Exceeds Expectations: Charms, Transfiguration
    - Acceptable: Ancient Runes

    Occupational

  • Occupation: The Order of the Phoenix is his full time job. Remus depends on his friends to help support him, although he avoids asking at all costs, unless he's desperate.
    - As of 14 April 1979: Cashier at Slug & Jiggers Apothecary in Diagon Alley.
  • Previous Jobs: He joined the Order of the Phoenix immediately after leaving Hogwarts, and so never had a real job before -- nevermind that his lycanthropy makes it near impossible for him to even find a place that will hire him.

    The War

  • How is your character involved in the war? Although he is more than ready to help in any aspect that is needed of him, Remus is best at surveillance. He has extreme patience and a very watchful eye, with the ability to blend in well with crowds. Remus is also quite skilled with healing spells -- when one injues themselves so often, you tend to get in a lot of practice.
  • Will your character die during the next year? Nope.
  • If yes, please give some details on how/when you'd like this to occur: N/A

    Overall History

  • Family/Childhood: Bridget and David Lupin met young, and while they eventually did everything together a married couple would do -- living together, sharing a bank account -- they did not get married until their early 30s. One year later Bridget became pregnant, and on 10 March 1960, little Remus John Lupin was born early in the morning. Bridget decided not to return to work so she could stay home and take care of their new bundle of joy, and began to home school him once he was old enough. Remus grew quite attached to his mother, and at first was a little shy approaching the other children during trips to the playgrounds. Eventually, though, he was running around and playing with the best of them, getting into mischief as most children do. He was still a quiet boy, though, and enjoyed reading and putting his imagination to the test (the refrigerator was always covered with several stick-figure crayon drawings of great dragons and other various magical beasts).

All was well for the Lupin family, and Remus had a fairly happy childhood... or he might have, had it not been for one Fenrir Greyback. Remus' father, David, worked for the Werewolf Capture Unit in the Ministry of Magic. He knew it was a dangerous job, but he never suspected that it could place his own family in danger. After a successful capture of a couple renegade werewolves who had been terrorizing and killing witches and wizard, David was caught up in an interview with a reporter -- a few words too many escaped his lips. "These werewolves will never harm another person again," he had said, "but with notorious werewolves such as Fenrir Greyback still on the lose, we can't let up our guard. It's beasts like him that make me wonder why they still have as many rights as they do now." At the time, David did not think anything of the words he had said; his goal was to express that the capture team was competent and would continue to uphold their good work to protect people from werewolves who enjoyed killing others. He had believed in what he said -- working with the Werewolf Capture Unit, day to day David only knew of werewolves who hated wizards. It was difficult to think that any of them lived otherwise. He might have expected Greyback to attack him personally, but never would he have thought the werewolf would go after his own son.

Remus was just six years old when it happened. Young and curious, it was late one night when he saw a "doggy" sniffing around outside behind their house. The Lupins lived in a small cottage on the outskirts of a heavily wooded area, making it very easy for the werewolf to position himself close to the house. Sneaking outside while his parents weren't looking, they didn't realize Remus was outside until they heard the screaming. His father had rushed outside, wand drawn, to find his son struggling underneath a large werewolf -- it's jaws were clamped down on Remus' side. With his training as a member of the Werewolf Capture Unit, his father was able to chase Greyback off but, unfortunately, did not manage to catch the werewolf. Remus was rushed to St. Mungo's for care, and much of his stay in the hospital was a blur -- he remembers his parents crying, and mentions of an 'infection' and 'lycanthropy' and 'no cure'. With his son now a werewolf, David felt he could no longer do his job and resigned, taking up a position in the Floo Network Authority.

It was a week before Remus was finally allowed to go home, and his parents finally sat down with him to explain what was wrong. Try as they might to explain, it was too much to take in, and Remus just didn't understand what they were trying to say and why it was so bad. Dad worked with werewolves all the time at work, didn't he? Besides, turning into a wolf would be cool! His parents just worried too much, that was all. It wasn't long before the first full moon came -- to keep Remus safe away from others and from himself, the basement had been reinforced so he could stay there during the nights of the full moon. The first night of his transformation was the worst night of his life -- severe pain, followed by a night he couldn't remember, waking up bloody, aching, throat raw and crying; no matter how much he tried to curl up, he couldn't escape. This was when Remus learned what it was to be a werewolf.

Every full moon filled the young boy with dread and fear -- it was a monster he couldn't stop from taking over his body, as if it were an entirely other being inside of his consciousness. Over time, as Remus grew older, he began to understand werewolves more; it took a long time, but eventually he learned to accept his fate. Throughout the years of his childhood, his parents did everything they could to help him; they invested and donated to many organizations in the support of werewolves, and sent several letters to the Ministry of Magic asking for more werewolf rights.

When Remus turned ten years old, he began to worry about what he was going to do about school. He desperately wanted to go, but he didn't think he would be accepted anymore due to his lycanthropy; nearly all of the books he had read on the subject did not portray creatures like him in a very good light. His parents, however, contacted Headmaster Albus Dumbledore himself about their problem. The Headmaster agreed to let Remus attend school, on the condition that he was secured in an old shack near Hogsmeade for every full moon. He rest assured that the young werewolf would be quite safe, and so would everyone in the school. This first meeting with Dumbledore left a big impression on Remus, instantly taking a liking to the Headmaster -- he could hardly wait to begin attending Hogwarts.

  • School/Work: A year later, eleven year old Remus Lupin was being escorted to Platform 9¾ by both of his parents. For nearly a month before this day they had been constantly reminding him how he had to keep his lycanthropy a secret while at the same time, assuring him everything was going to be fine. He could tell that they were a lot more worried than he was, and he was reminded of the vague memories he had of his time in St. Mungo's -- especially once he got on the train and realized he actually was a lot more worried than he previously thought. In his panic, Remus took the first empty compartment he could find on the train and hid behind a book for the entire trip, merely smiling politely when other witches and wizards greeted him. Thankfully, the length of the train ride was enough to calm his nerves, and when he arrived at Hogwarts he was much more relaxed (albeit still nervous).

Remus was surprised to be sorted into Gryffindor, although not disappointed -- from what he had read about Hogwarts, he thought that the house of Gryffindor were for students who were brave, and he didn't feel he was brave at all. Nevertheless, he happily took his place at the table with his fellow housemates. After the welcoming feast, Dumbledore took Remus aside to his office and explained to him how the full moon nights would work, and the "new rumours" of a little house that would soon be known as the Shrieking Shack. Remus, feeling this was someone he could trust and talk to, expressed his feelings of how nervous he was that someone would find out and that he'd be expelled, and no other school would take him and he'd never get a home or a job ever and oh, he knew this would never work, he should never have come at all. But Dumbledore, calm and understanding, put Remus' fears to rest after a long talk.

Remus left Dumbledore's office with a new confidence (and a new fondness for lemon sherbet sweets), ready to face whatever was to come. Perhaps he was brave after all. His roommates were quite... different than he was; James Potter and Sirius Black, loud and mischievous, and Peter Pettigrew, a small boy who was much more timid than even Remus was. He was amazed at how quickly the four of them bonded into a fast friendship that would last longer than any of them would expect in the years to come. Although, if Remus was honest with himself, it annoyed him how easily James and Sirius seemed to pass their classes while he had to struggle just to keep up with their grades. How they slacked off so much and still made excellent grades was something Remus would never know.

In effort to make sure his friends did not figure out what he really was, Remus had to make up excuses for the times he missed classes and didn't come back to Gryffindor Tower for the night -- his mother was ill, his great aunt had passed away, his father was ill, his mother was sick again... he tried his best to keep up with his lies and excuses, but coming up with one each month wasn't as easy as it might seem. Eventually, he lost track and soon enough his friends had caught on (really, how many times could the same person die?). When James, Sirius and Peter confronted him about his secret, Remus felt like he was going to be ill -- this was it. It was all over, just as he feared on his first day. They would expel him now, for sure; the one thing he was asked to do and he had failed at it. But he had underestimated them -- they weren't going to tell anyone at all, and still considered him their friend. Remus was so overwhelmed with relief that he nearly felt sick all over again. From then on, Remus didn't have to lie to them anymore, and feels they all became much closer friends because of it.

If there was one downfall to this, it was that Remus became much more lenient on his friends' actions; he didn't speak up when they picked on the less popular students, but he didn't participate, either. He was afraid that if he did say something, they wouldn't want to be friends anymore, and Remus was just so relieved to have friends who still liked him after learning his secret that he didn't want to risk it. Occasionally, he would make a small comment or remark later (that inadvertently made them feel guilty, although Remus didn't realize he'd had this affect on them) about what they've done, but never anything more than that.

His friends surprised him yet again when, in their fourth year of Hogwarts, the three of them managed to become Animagus so that they could accompany him on the nights of the full moon. At first, Remus protested -- the last thing he wanted was for his friends to get hurt because of them, but eventually he gave in and allowed them to stay with him. He showed them the secret path under the Whomping Willow so they could get to the Shrieking Shack, and by the next full moon, Remus was surprised to wake up that morning much less injured and sore than usual. At the evidence that none of his friends had been hurt, he began to warm up to the idea and continued to let them come along.

Remus was appointed to Prefect in his fifth year, but despite his new responsibility, he still showed favour to his friends, even though he knew that he shouldn't. What with every thing they have done for him (becoming Animagi, for Merlin's sake), how could he not cut them some slack? Although Remus did not participate in his friends more cruel acts, he was still a teenage boy (and a Gryffindor to boot), and was not without a sense of mischief. Perhaps with a more sensible mind, Remus managed to get out of trouble more often than the others -- although that is not to say he didn't land himself his fair share of detentions.

The "Marauders" made their biggest achievement in their sixth year (well, second to becoming Animagi, at any rate) when they finished work on a map they titled The Marauder's Map. It truly was a remarkable invention that required a lot of fancy and complicated charm work, plus a long, extensive search of the entirety of Hogwarts Castle and it's grounds. Luckily, their Animagus forms made exploring the place past curfew much easier. Closer than ever, the Marauders were inseparable and Remus could not have been happier. It was late in the year when Sirius decided to pull a prank on their favourite Slytherin to pick on, Severus Snape, who had grown very curious as to where Remus disappeared to every month. Letting slip information about the Whomping Willow, Snape had taken Sirius' advice and at the next full moon, went to investigate. It was lucky for all of them that James' managed to stop him from entering the Shrieking Shack, saving Snape's life. When Remus learned of what happened the next morning, he was more furious than he has ever been in his life.

For the first time, Remus instigated a fight with Sirius, unafraid to hold his thoughts back -- he had been fine with the small jokes and jests about his lycanthropy, but using it for a prank the lowest thing anyone could have ever done. He felt disrespected and betrayed, and it took a long time for Remus to forgive him; deep down, he never really has, but Remus has learned to push it aside. The incident forever changed his attitude toward his friends, and Sirius in particular; he became less concerned about what they would think about his comments, and began telling them what he thought of their actions a little more often. Although the blame was mostly on Sirius, he partly blamed himself for being so lenient and accepting of his friends -- perhaps if he had been a little more strict, Sirius would not have felt what he did was a good idea.

Upon leaving school, Remus was suddenly faced with how hard life as a werewolf really is -- what with how sheltered his life was in Hogwarts and being so easily accepted by his friends, he'd been blinded from reality. Laws required him to register as a werewolf, and he was also required to tell all potential employers of his "condition" -- a condition, he found, which was perfectly acceptable to discriminate against. Unable to find a job, Remus reluctantly had to accept the help of friends and family. Without a job, he could not afford a place of his own, but Sirius was kind enough to extend an invitation to share a flat with him, which Remus gladly accepted (despite Sirius' living habits).

  • Recent History: Remus joined the Order of the Phoenix almost immediately after leaving Hogwarts, along with the rest of his friends. As a werewolf, Remus knew all too well what it was like to be discriminated against, and he wanted to help stand up for what he believed was right. Due to his condition, he could never become an Auror, and so this was the one way he knew he could help fight back against You-Know-Who. Although he is a supporter of Dumbledore, his lycanthropy -- as much as he'd hate to admit it -- makes him a valuable member to try and gain other werewolf supporters. The world may be against their kind, but he is proof that not all werewolves were evil, and there was kindness to be found in others. Whatever the case may be, Remus is more than willing to help the Order in any way that he possibly can.

Still sharing a flat with Sirius Black, Remus continues to utilize the convenience of the Shrieking Shack for his transformations during the full moons. He feels guilty for not being able to obtain a job to support himself or to pay back his friends for all that they have given him but, sadly, there is not much else he can do about it. All he can hope for is a better life in the future, when people learn that discrimination and prejudice against others who are different from them is not the right path to be on. As of yet, he still does not know the identity of the werewolf who bit him, continuing to feel sorry for him, as he thinks the werewolf had no control over himsef that night.
