Basics Physical ![]() Personal Near the full moon, he can be a little moody and knowing this of himself, is often quiet and distant (not to mention his cravings for rare meat). He gets frustrated when people worry too much about him, especially during these times when all he wants is to not discuss it. Remus is more comfortable (and less sensitive) making jokes about his condition when it isn't so close to the full moon. Remus is slowly becoming an expert on the art of Changing The Subject. There are often many times when he doesn't want to talk about something, wishes to avoid expressing his opinions, or is uncomfortable with the subject being discussed. Thus, he will try to divert the topic to something else in hopes of avoiding it altogether. Although it is sometimes obvious when he is attempting to do this, he is also quite stubborn when it comes to subjects he doesn't want to speak about, so it's usually easier to just drop it and let him have his way. He puts others before himself, and keeps most of his emotions bottled up as much as he can -- it's one of the few things in his life he feels he can actually control. Unfortunately, keeping everything locked up causes him to become angrier than he normally would be otherwise when he does get upset (the result of the prank Sirius played on Snape with the Shrieking Shack is a good example of this). Despite his reserved nature, Remus didn't become a Marauder simply because he shared a room in school with his three friends. There is a brave and mischievous side to him that people wouldn't guess he even had, unless they knew him in Hogwarts. He's anything but timid, despite how he may appear. He also underestimates people and tries not to give them the benefit of the doubt -- yes, while he has made friends who so not discriminate against him, Remus would rather assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised. He is extremely good with keeping secrets and listening to others when they need a sympathetic ear. As mentioned, he has an incredible patience. once he does trust someone well enough to share his secrets, Remus is a very loyal friend. He is intelligent (although he has certainly worked to get there) and finds enjoyment in helping others with anything that he could be useful with. Making others happy and putting their needs before his is what makes him happy. As for magical abilities, Remus is more book-smart than skilled. While he's far from incompetent, he knows the techniques behind the spells, but not the strength. His weakest subjects were Potions, Herbology, and had he bothered to take Care of Magical Creatures, he would not have done well in that class, either. His senses are a better than normal wizards, but this also makes him more sensitive to smells, which is an imperative part of potion making. His best subjects were Defence Against the Dark Arts and, of course, Astronomy. Remus is also skilled with several healing spells. Relationships - David John Lupin: Father; halfblood; Gryffindor; deceased 20 April 1979. Used to work in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the Werewolf Capture Unit, but resigned as soon as his son was bitten. He now works in the Floo Network Authority of the Department of Magical Transportation. A far less demanding job, to be sure, but one that is also far less likely to anger a vengeful werewolf. - Bridget Marie Lupin née Ashby: Mother; halfblood; Hufflepuff; deceased 20 April 1979. Housewife, and perfectly happy to be one! Before she married David, she was working in a small muggle restaurant as a waitress. Educational - Outstanding: Defence Against the Dark Arts, Astronomy - Exceeds Expectations: Charms, Transfiguration - Acceptable: Ancient Runes Occupational - As of 14 April 1979: Cashier at Slug & Jiggers Apothecary in Diagon Alley. The War ![]() Overall History All was well for the Lupin family, and Remus had a fairly happy childhood... or he might have, had it not been for one Fenrir Greyback. Remus' father, David, worked for the Werewolf Capture Unit in the Ministry of Magic. He knew it was a dangerous job, but he never suspected that it could place his own family in danger. After a successful capture of a couple renegade werewolves who had been terrorizing and killing witches and wizard, David was caught up in an interview with a reporter -- a few words too many escaped his lips. "These werewolves will never harm another person again," he had said, "but with notorious werewolves such as Fenrir Greyback still on the lose, we can't let up our guard. It's beasts like him that make me wonder why they still have as many rights as they do now." At the time, David did not think anything of the words he had said; his goal was to express that the capture team was competent and would continue to uphold their good work to protect people from werewolves who enjoyed killing others. He had believed in what he said -- working with the Werewolf Capture Unit, day to day David only knew of werewolves who hated wizards. It was difficult to think that any of them lived otherwise. He might have expected Greyback to attack him personally, but never would he have thought the werewolf would go after his own son. Remus was just six years old when it happened. Young and curious, it was late one night when he saw a "doggy" sniffing around outside behind their house. The Lupins lived in a small cottage on the outskirts of a heavily wooded area, making it very easy for the werewolf to position himself close to the house. Sneaking outside while his parents weren't looking, they didn't realize Remus was outside until they heard the screaming. His father had rushed outside, wand drawn, to find his son struggling underneath a large werewolf -- it's jaws were clamped down on Remus' side. With his training as a member of the Werewolf Capture Unit, his father was able to chase Greyback off but, unfortunately, did not manage to catch the werewolf. Remus was rushed to St. Mungo's for care, and much of his stay in the hospital was a blur -- he remembers his parents crying, and mentions of an 'infection' and 'lycanthropy' and 'no cure'. With his son now a werewolf, David felt he could no longer do his job and resigned, taking up a position in the Floo Network Authority. It was a week before Remus was finally allowed to go home, and his parents finally sat down with him to explain what was wrong. Try as they might to explain, it was too much to take in, and Remus just didn't understand what they were trying to say and why it was so bad. Dad worked with werewolves all the time at work, didn't he? Besides, turning into a wolf would be cool! His parents just worried too much, that was all. It wasn't long before the first full moon came -- to keep Remus safe away from others and from himself, the basement had been reinforced so he could stay there during the nights of the full moon. The first night of his transformation was the worst night of his life -- severe pain, followed by a night he couldn't remember, waking up bloody, aching, throat raw and crying; no matter how much he tried to curl up, he couldn't escape. This was when Remus learned what it was to be a werewolf. Every full moon filled the young boy with dread and fear -- it was a monster he couldn't stop from taking over his body, as if it were an entirely other being inside of his consciousness. Over time, as Remus grew older, he began to understand werewolves more; it took a long time, but eventually he learned to accept his fate. Throughout the years of his childhood, his parents did everything they could to help him; they invested and donated to many organizations in the support of werewolves, and sent several letters to the Ministry of Magic asking for more werewolf rights. When Remus turned ten years old, he began to worry about what he was going to do about school. He desperately wanted to go, but he didn't think he would be accepted anymore due to his lycanthropy; nearly all of the books he had read on the subject did not portray creatures like him in a very good light. His parents, however, contacted Headmaster Albus Dumbledore himself about their problem. The Headmaster agreed to let Remus attend school, on the condition that he was secured in an old shack near Hogsmeade for every full moon. He rest assured that the young werewolf would be quite safe, and so would everyone in the school. This first meeting with Dumbledore left a big impression on Remus, instantly taking a liking to the Headmaster -- he could hardly wait to begin attending Hogwarts. ![]() Remus was surprised to be sorted into Gryffindor, although not disappointed -- from what he had read about Hogwarts, he thought that the house of Gryffindor were for students who were brave, and he didn't feel he was brave at all. Nevertheless, he happily took his place at the table with his fellow housemates. After the welcoming feast, Dumbledore took Remus aside to his office and explained to him how the full moon nights would work, and the "new rumours" of a little house that would soon be known as the Shrieking Shack. Remus, feeling this was someone he could trust and talk to, expressed his feelings of how nervous he was that someone would find out and that he'd be expelled, and no other school would take him and he'd never get a home or a job ever and oh, he knew this would never work, he should never have come at all. But Dumbledore, calm and understanding, put Remus' fears to rest after a long talk. Remus left Dumbledore's office with a new confidence (and a new fondness for lemon sherbet sweets), ready to face whatever was to come. Perhaps he was brave after all. His roommates were quite... different than he was; James Potter and Sirius Black, loud and mischievous, and Peter Pettigrew, a small boy who was much more timid than even Remus was. He was amazed at how quickly the four of them bonded into a fast friendship that would last longer than any of them would expect in the years to come. Although, if Remus was honest with himself, it annoyed him how easily James and Sirius seemed to pass their classes while he had to struggle just to keep up with their grades. How they slacked off so much and still made excellent grades was something Remus would never know. In effort to make sure his friends did not figure out what he really was, Remus had to make up excuses for the times he missed classes and didn't come back to Gryffindor Tower for the night -- his mother was ill, his great aunt had passed away, his father was ill, his mother was sick again... he tried his best to keep up with his lies and excuses, but coming up with one each month wasn't as easy as it might seem. Eventually, he lost track and soon enough his friends had caught on (really, how many times could the same person die?). When James, Sirius and Peter confronted him about his secret, Remus felt like he was going to be ill -- this was it. It was all over, just as he feared on his first day. They would expel him now, for sure; the one thing he was asked to do and he had failed at it. But he had underestimated them -- they weren't going to tell anyone at all, and still considered him their friend. Remus was so overwhelmed with relief that he nearly felt sick all over again. From then on, Remus didn't have to lie to them anymore, and feels they all became much closer friends because of it. If there was one downfall to this, it was that Remus became much more lenient on his friends' actions; he didn't speak up when they picked on the less popular students, but he didn't participate, either. He was afraid that if he did say something, they wouldn't want to be friends anymore, and Remus was just so relieved to have friends who still liked him after learning his secret that he didn't want to risk it. Occasionally, he would make a small comment or remark later (that inadvertently made them feel guilty, although Remus didn't realize he'd had this affect on them) about what they've done, but never anything more than that. His friends surprised him yet again when, in their fourth year of Hogwarts, the three of them managed to become Animagus so that they could accompany him on the nights of the full moon. At first, Remus protested -- the last thing he wanted was for his friends to get hurt because of them, but eventually he gave in and allowed them to stay with him. He showed them the secret path under the Whomping Willow so they could get to the Shrieking Shack, and by the next full moon, Remus was surprised to wake up that morning much less injured and sore than usual. At the evidence that none of his friends had been hurt, he began to warm up to the idea and continued to let them come along. Remus was appointed to Prefect in his fifth year, but despite his new responsibility, he still showed favour to his friends, even though he knew that he shouldn't. What with every thing they have done for him (becoming Animagi, for Merlin's sake), how could he not cut them some slack? Although Remus did not participate in his friends more cruel acts, he was still a teenage boy (and a Gryffindor to boot), and was not without a sense of mischief. Perhaps with a more sensible mind, Remus managed to get out of trouble more often than the others -- although that is not to say he didn't land himself his fair share of detentions. The "Marauders" made their biggest achievement in their sixth year (well, second to becoming Animagi, at any rate) when they finished work on a map they titled The Marauder's Map. It truly was a remarkable invention that required a lot of fancy and complicated charm work, plus a long, extensive search of the entirety of Hogwarts Castle and it's grounds. Luckily, their Animagus forms made exploring the place past curfew much easier. Closer than ever, the Marauders were inseparable and Remus could not have been happier. It was late in the year when Sirius decided to pull a prank on their favourite Slytherin to pick on, Severus Snape, who had grown very curious as to where Remus disappeared to every month. Letting slip information about the Whomping Willow, Snape had taken Sirius' advice and at the next full moon, went to investigate. It was lucky for all of them that James' managed to stop him from entering the Shrieking Shack, saving Snape's life. When Remus learned of what happened the next morning, he was more furious than he has ever been in his life. For the first time, Remus instigated a fight with Sirius, unafraid to hold his thoughts back -- he had been fine with the small jokes and jests about his lycanthropy, but using it for a prank the lowest thing anyone could have ever done. He felt disrespected and betrayed, and it took a long time for Remus to forgive him; deep down, he never really has, but Remus has learned to push it aside. The incident forever changed his attitude toward his friends, and Sirius in particular; he became less concerned about what they would think about his comments, and began telling them what he thought of their actions a little more often. Although the blame was mostly on Sirius, he partly blamed himself for being so lenient and accepting of his friends -- perhaps if he had been a little more strict, Sirius would not have felt what he did was a good idea. Upon leaving school, Remus was suddenly faced with how hard life as a werewolf really is -- what with how sheltered his life was in Hogwarts and being so easily accepted by his friends, he'd been blinded from reality. Laws required him to register as a werewolf, and he was also required to tell all potential employers of his "condition" -- a condition, he found, which was perfectly acceptable to discriminate against. Unable to find a job, Remus reluctantly had to accept the help of friends and family. Without a job, he could not afford a place of his own, but Sirius was kind enough to extend an invitation to share a flat with him, which Remus gladly accepted (despite Sirius' living habits). Still sharing a flat with Sirius Black, Remus continues to utilize the convenience of the Shrieking Shack for his transformations during the full moons. He feels guilty for not being able to obtain a job to support himself or to pay back his friends for all that they have given him but, sadly, there is not much else he can do about it. All he can hope for is a better life in the future, when people learn that discrimination and prejudice against others who are different from them is not the right path to be on. As of yet, he still does not know the identity of the werewolf who bit him, continuing to feel sorry for him, as he thinks the werewolf had no control over himsef that night. |
